Dubbed the "ultimate trip" in its day, Stanley Kubrick's influential masterpiece remains true to both senses of the phrase. A controlled kaleidoscope of images and ideas, 2001: A Space Odyssey is both a space-travel adventure and, with its explosive climactic sequence, a hallucinogenic voyage of the mind. Based on the Arthur C. Clarke story "The Sentinel," 2001 initially bewildered many viewers with its lengthy, wordless opening sequence involving prehistoric protohumans and a mysterious black monolith. Jumping four million years into the future, two robotic astronauts (Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood) and a supercomputer named HAL, who seems more human than they are, head to Jupiter aboard the space-ship Discovery. This doomed mission produces such iconic scenes as the homicidal HAL's attack on the astronauts and the legendarily enigmatic "star child" birth set to Richard Strauss's "Thus Spake Zarathustra." 2001's unconventional approach to narrative thrilled adventurous '60s audiences, and fans still ponder the questions this landmark science-fiction film raises. Is the monolith God or the work of aliens? Only God and the late Stanley Kubrick know for sure. Frank Lovece

A mind-bending sci-fi symphony, Stanley Kubrick's landmark 1968 epic pushed the limits of narrative and special effects toward a meditation on technology and humanity. Based on Arthur C. Clarke's story The Sentinel, Kubrick and Clarke's screenplay is structured in four movements. At the Dawn of Man, a group of hominids encounters a mysterious black monolith alien to their surroundings. To the strains of Strauss' "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," a hominid discovers the first weapon, using a bone to kill prey. As the hominid tosses the bone in the air, Kubrick cuts to a 21st century spacecraft hovering over the Earth, skipping ahead millions of years in technological development only to imply that man hasn't advanced very far at all psychologically. U.S. scientist Dr. Heywood Floyd (William Sylvester) travels to the moon to check out the discovery of a strange object on the moon's surface: a black monolith. As Floyd touches the mass, however, a piercing sound emitted by the object stops his fellow investigators in their path. Cutting ahead 18 months, impassive astronauts David Bowman (Keir Dullea) and Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) head toward Jupiter on the space ship Discovery, their only company three hibernating astronauts and the vocal, man-made HAL 9000 computer running the entire ship. When the all-too-human HAL malfunctions, however, he tries to murder the astronauts to cover his error, forcing Bowman to defend himself the only way he can. Free of HAL, and finally informed of the voyage's purpose by a recording from Floyd, Bowman journeys to "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite," through the psychedelic slit-scan star-gate to an 18th century room, and the completion of the monolith's evolutionary mission. With assistance from special effects expert Douglas Trumbull, Kubrick spent over two years meticulously creating the most "realistic" depictions of outer space ever seen, greatly advancing cinematic technology for a story expressing grave doubts about technology itself. Despite some initial critical reservations that it was too long and too dull, 2001 became one of the most popular films of 1968, underlining the generation gap between young moviegoers who wanted to see something new and challenging and oldsters who "didn't get it." Provocatively billed as "the ultimate trip," 2001 quickly caught on with a counterculture youth audience open to a contemplative (i.e. chemically enhanced) viewing experience of a film suggesting that the way to enlightenment was to free one's mind of the U.S. military-industrial-technological complex. This belated sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) is directed by Peter Hyams. Roy Scheider plays the astronaut/skipper of a U.S.-Soviet space mission, sent to find out what happened to the missing Discovery flight that carried Keir Dullea into the beyond in the original 2001. Scheider's polyglot crew includes Americans John Lithgow and Bob Balaban (the latter a computer whiz, responsible for the notorious HAL 9000) and Russians Helen Mirren, Elya Baskin and Natasha Schneider. The reason for this international mixture is that the world is on the brink of nuclear war, and it is hoped that the space mission will assure east-west solidarity (in this respect, 2010 dates far more than 2001, given the collapse of the Iron Curtain). When the astronauts catch up with Dullea, still in orbit around Jupiter, producer/director/writer Hyams attempts to demystify the enigmatic climax of 2001. Arthur C. Clarke, author of the story upon which 2001 was based, appears in 2010 as a man on a park bench. Incidentally, the voice-over credited to Olga Mallsnerd is actually Candice Bergen. (The name Mallsnerd is a play on the name of one of the characters created by her ventriloquist father Edgar.) Hal Erickson

While this dark, often violent, and hilarious film from director Walter Hill will always be remembered as the one that launched Eddie Murphy's movie career, it may be even more significant as the prototype for visceral, R-rated buddy comedies. After a hair-raising opening shoot-out scene that leaves two cops dead, Hill sets his oddball pairing off and running. In order to track down the shooters, grizzled detective Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) springs their ex-partner from prison on a 48-hour pass. The wisecracking con, Reggie Hammond (Murphy), is less than enthused about the assignment, and Nolte and Murphy's razor-edged verbal (and physical) friction during the investigation quickly becomes the picture's centerpiece. Murphy's angry glower, street-smart swagger, and machine-gun delivery -- witness the now-legendary redneck bar scene -- is undeniably some of his most effective screen work. Still, it is the strategically fleshed-out juxtaposition of Nolte and Murphy's characters that gives their improbable partnership its explosive comedic punch. Of all the cop-buddy shoot-'em-ups that have followed, such as the various Lethal Weapon and Rush Hour films, none has so effectively bottled the spark that Hill managed to capture between his two leads in this definitive action/comedy. Matthew Grimm

A variation on the "buddy-cop" hybridized genre, 48 HRS. greatly bolstered the career of Nick Nolte and made comedian Eddie Murphy a bonafide box-office sensation. When a pair of reckless cop-killers break out of prison, grizzled detective Jack Cates (Nolte) is left no alternative but to spring fast-talking hustler Reggie Hammond (Murphy) from the penitentiary in order to find the criminals. The catch: the pair only have 48 hours to complete their assignment before Hammond must return to prison. Naturally, the two despise each other and even engage in fisticuffs, but eventually the danger facing them proves a strong enough common bond for them to play on the same team, and even achieve a little mutual admiration. A splendidly cynical adaptation of Anthony Burgess's controversial novel, Stanley Kubrick's cult classic initially revolted moviegoers with its savage violence and apocalyptic view of a not-too-distant future. Three decades later, this bravura film, perhaps Kubrick's greatest, retains the ability to shock; moreover, its message seems more timely than ever. Malcolm McDowell is brilliant as the ringleader of a small band of thugs who roam the city streets by night seeking thrills, preying upon hapless citizens. Finally apprehended by the authorities, he is subjected to reconditioning in a government-implemented aversion-therapy program and returned to a dystopian society. Kubrick presents the depredations of McDowell and his "droogs" in a manner that is unremitting yet highly stylized; with his signature elegance and control, the director manages to suggest much more than he shows, and the effect is chilling. While differing from the Burgess novel in minor narrative details, Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange captures the book's essence much more completely than most literary adaptations. Although Kubrick leavens the stomach-churning violence with satire, he hews closely to the message set down in Burgess's book: Free will must be preserved, whatever the consequences, because attempts at governmental control of thought and behavior pose a far greater danger. Ed Hulse

Stanley Kubrick dissects the nature of violence in this darkly ironic, near-future satire, adapted from Anthony Burgess' novel, complete with "Nadsat" slang. Classical music-loving proto-punk Alex (Malcolm McDowell) and his "Droogs" spend their nights getting high at the Korova Milkbar before embarking on "a little of the old ultraviolence," such as terrorizing a writer, Mr. Alexander (Patrick Magee), and raping his wife while jauntily warbling "Singin' in the Rain." After Alex is jailed for bludgeoning the Cat Lady (Miriam Karlin) to death with one of her phallic sculptures, Alex submits to the Ludovico behavior modification technique to earn his freedom; he's conditioned to abhor violence through watching gory movies, and even his adored Beethoven is turned against him. Returned to the world defenseless, Alex becomes the victim of his prior victims, with Mr. Alexander using Beethoven's "Ninth" to inflict the greatest pain of all. When society sees what the state has done to Alex, however, the politically expedient move is made. Casting a coldly pessimistic view on the then-future of the late '70s-early '80s, Kubrick and production designer John Barry created a world of high-tech cultural decay, mixing old details like bowler hats with bizarrely alienating "new" environments like the Milkbar. Alex's violence is horrific, yet it is an aesthetically calculated fact of his existence; his charisma makes the icily clinical Ludovico treatment seem more negatively abusive than positively therapeutic. Alex may be a sadist, but the state's autocratic control is another violent act, rather than a solution. Released in late 1971 (within weeks of Sam Peckinpah's brutally violent Straw Dogs), the film sparked considerable controversy in the U.S. with its X-rated violence; after copycat crimes in England, Kubrick withdrew the film from British distribution until after his death. Opinion was divided on the meaning of Kubrick's detached view of this shocking future, but, whether the discord drew the curious or Kubrick's scathing diagnosis spoke to the chaotic cultural moment, A Clockwork Orange became a hit. On the heels of New York Film Critics Circle awards as Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, Kubrick received Oscar nominations in all three categories. Lucia Bozzola

By the time Sergio Leone made this film, Italians had already produced about 20 films ironically labelled "spaghetti westerns." Leone approached the genre with great love and humor. Although the plot was admittedly borrowed from Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo (1961), Leone managed to create a work of his own that would serve as a model for many films to come. Clint Eastwood plays a cynical gunfighter who comes to a small border town and offers his services to two rivaling gangs. Neither gang is aware of his double play, and each thinks it is using him, but the stranger will outwit them both. The picture was the first installment in a cycle commonly known as the "Dollars" trilogy. Later, United Artists, who distributed it in the U.S., coined another term for it: the "Man With No Name" trilogy. While not as impressive as its follow-ups For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), A Fistful of Dollars contains all of Leone's eventual trademarks: taciturn characters, precise framing, extreme close-ups, and the haunting music of Ennio Morricone. Not released in the U.S. until 1967 due to copyright problems, the film was decisive in both Clint Eastwood's career and the recognition of the Italian western. Yuri German

The All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League was founded in 1943, when most of the men of baseball-playing age were far away in Europe and Asia fighting World War II. The league flourished until after World War II, when, with the men's return, the league was consigned to oblivion. Director Penny Marshall and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel re-create the wartime era when women's baseball looked to stand a good chance of sweeping the country. The story begins as a candy-bar tycoon enlists agents to scour the country to find women who could play ball. In the backwoods of Oregon, two sisters -- Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty) -- are discovered. Dottie can hit and catch, while Kit can throw a mean fastball. The girls come to Chicago to try out for the team with other prospects that include their soon-to-be-teammates Mae Mordabito (Madonna), Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell), and Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh). The team's owner, Walter Harvey (Gary Marshall) needs someone to coach his team and he picks one-time home-run champion Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), who is now a broken-down alcoholic. After a few weeks of training, as Dugan sobers up, the team begins to show some promise. By the end of the season, the team has improved to the point where they are competing in the World Series (which is no big deal, since there are only four teams in the league). Paul Brenner

Clint Eastwood, hot off of his Academy Award win for Unforgiven, directed this small character study, appearing in the guise of a cops-and-robbers action picture. The film takes place during the fall of 1963. Eight-year old Phillip Perry (T.J. Lowther), the son of a devout Jehovah's Witness mother, is staying home while all the other children are out trick-or-treating. But then prison escapee Butch Haynes (Kevin Costner) appears in his kitchen. Needing a hostage to aid him in his escape from jail, he grabs Phillip. Phillip curiously looks up to Butch and willingly accompanies him. Butch gets rid of his fellow escapee after he tries to molest the child, and Butch and Phillip take to the Texas highway, on the run from the cops. The cop in pursuit in this instance is Police Chief Red Garnett (Clint Eastwood), riding in his sleek Populux Airglide trailer -- his "mobile command headquarters." On the road with Garnett is Sally Gerber (Laura Dern), a pushy pre-feminist criminologist, along with a creepy federal agent who is an expert sharpshooter. Butch is not particularly anxious to make it to the Texas borderline, and neither is Garnett in any particular hurry to catch Butch. As Butch and Phillip form a father-son attachment, the paths of Butch and Garnett gradually come together, in time for a final confrontation, after which Garnett confesses, "I don't know nothing. I don't know a damn thing." Paul Brenner

Robert Redford's lyrical direction sets the tone for this evocative adaptation of author Norman MacLean's memoir of his idyllic Montana youth. The MacLean family is presided over by the strict but encouraging Rev. MacLean (Tom Skerritt) and his loving wife (Brenda Blethyn). Craig Sheffer stars as the young Norman, the older son in his family, who takes his school work and writing a bit too seriously for Paul (Brad Pitt), the impetuous younger son, to take much stock in. Paul would rather have a good time, drink and play cards than get involved with academic study. Where Norman wants to be a college literature professor, Paul would prefer to stay in Montana all his life and wrangle some kind of job writing for a local newspaper. But, ironically, Paul is the better fly fisherman and in this way attains a sense of perfection. The film also details the MacLean boys' involvement with a colorful group of town's people -- including a young Indian woman Paul decides to date and the defiant Jessie (Emily Lloyd), whom Norman later marries. Martial arts hero Steven Seagal developed, co-wrote, co-produced, choreographed, and debuted in this thrill ride -- a cop film with more attitude, and more plot, than its star had duties on the set. Seagal is Nico Toscani, an Italian immigrant, American patriot, ex-CIA agent, aikido specialist, and unorthodox Chicago policeman. He is as committed to his job as he is to his personalized brand of justice: expert and thorough bone-crushing. When the FBI orders his squad to ignore the mysterious shipment of military explosives they seized from a notorious narcotics dealer, Nico defiantly pursues his own investigation. With the help of his partner Jax (Pam Grier), he sifts through a tangled web of Catholic priests, illegal immigrants, and trained assassins to uncover a drug cartel run directly out of the CIA by an official named Zagon Henry Silva. Nico remembers the man from his CIA days in Vietnam, when Zagon used the agency (and the war) as a front for smuggling opium. At the time, Nico was too outranked to thwart him, but he will no longer let Zagon abuse his position to remain immune from prosecution -- especially now that the official has plans to murder a U.S. senator. Zagon may be above the law of most men, but he is certainly not above Nico's. ~ Aubry Anne D'Arminio, All Movie Guide

A sober, heartwarming, and inspirational drama, Akeelah and the Bee employs intelligent writing and unusually sensitive performances, especially from young African-American actress Keke Palmer in the title role. Eleven-year-old Akeelah Anderson, who lives in south central Los Angeles with her working mother (Angela Bassett), is an extremely bright girl whose grades are slipping due to unwelcome, outside influences. To get her back on track, the school principal has her enter the national spelling bee. Akeelah's coach for the event is Dr. Joshua Larabee (Laurence Fishburne), a college professor on a leave of absence following the death of his daughter. Writer-director Doug Atchison draws his characters sharply, giving clearly definable traits to each but leaving a certain amount of room for interpretation by the actors, who rise to the challenge magnificently. Larabee keenly understands that Akeelah's love for words links her to the father she lost as a small girl, and she realizes on some level that she has become a surrogate for the daughter Larabee lost. Fishburne's demonstrative passion is perfectly balanced by Palmer's quiet strength, and their scenes together are pure, unadulterated movie magic. The climactic spelling bee doesn't unfold along predictable lines, and it demonstrates that Akeelah has learned things she can't get out of a dictionary or thesaurus. Ed Hulse
Synopsis
All Movie Guide
A young girl learns to believe in herself and value her intelligence in this critically-acclaimed, family-friendly drama. Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) is an 11-year-old being raised by her mother, Tanya (Angela Bassett), who was left on her own after the death of her husband. While Akeelah is a very bright girl, she's hardly a star student and seems afraid of acting like a bookworm around her friends and classmates. However, Akeelah's teacher sees genuine potential in her student and encourages her to enter the school's spelling bee, convinced Akeelah has the brains and the talent to win. Akeelah applies herself and emerges victorious in the local competition, but discovers the going gets tougher when she goes to a statewide bee, studying for the regionals under the aegis of strict English teacher Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne), who consents to act as her coach A college professor who was a spelling-bee champ as a child, Larabee is a stubborn taskmaster who questions Akeelah's ability and commitment, but in time he develops a respect for his pupil and helps her prove her talent as she climbs the ladder to the National Spelling Bee. Meanwhile, Tanya feels intimidated when she finds the contests are dominated by children from wealthy families and privileged backgrounds, and argues that the competition may not be in Akeelah's best interest, believing instead that homework should be the one and only priority in Akeelah's life. It soon becomes apparent that if Akeelah has any intention of entering the national spelling bee championships in Washington, D.C., she will not do so with Tanya's permission or blessing. This marks the first onscreen reunion of Bassett and Fishburne since their Academy Award-nommed performances as Ike Turner and Tina Turner in Brian Gibson's 1993 biopic, What's Love Got to Do with It.

Description: Director Oliver Stone chalks up an ambitious entry on his biopic resume (past entries include films about Jim Morrison, Richard Nixon, and JFK among others) with this cinematic treatise on the life of the mighty Alexander the Great. Despite his young death at 32, Alexander packed some unimaginable conquests into his limited years by ruling over a huge chunk of the globe. Stone draws on a voice-over narration provided by Anthony Hopkins, whose character is named Ptolemy, to aurally depict some of the battles. Thus, Stone shifts the weight of the film to focus on the personality of Alexander (Colin Farrell), a man who is stricken by overwhelming personal insecurities that come in direct contrast to his bold achievements. Complex dealings with his mother (Angelina Jolie) and father (Val Kilmer) plague him, as does his turbulent relationship with his wife, Roxane (Rosario Dawson). His connection with his best friend, Hephaestion (Jared Leto), is ambiguous, with Stone touching on their vaunted homosexuality via some shared tender moments. As these personal battles are played out, Ptolemy fills the historic gaps in the narrative by charting the incredible conflicts that raged at Alexander's behest. Eventually, Stone lets loose with an epic on-screen battle, which sees Alexander's troops rumble across India in another country-conquering quest. But while his minions struggle, and Alexander demands success, it becomes clear that he is his own worst enemy. With the only real threat to Alexander coming from a tempestuous struggle with his own ego, Stone's summation of the great historical leader paints a picture of an embittered and solitary figure who was able to rule everyone apart from himself.

Acclaimed director David Fincher's promising career was lucky to survive this astonishingly wrong-headed, almost universally-despised second sequel to Alien (1979). The film careens into oblivion virtually from the beginning, as Lt. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is the only survivor of a crash-landing on a hellish, God-forsaken prison planet. Not only does the crash kill little Newt, completely obviating the entire point of the superior Aliens (1986), but Fincher then compounds his betrayal of that film's fans by having Ripley attend the girl's gruesome autopsy and barely bat an eye as the child's chest is bloodily ripped open with a steel bonesaw. Things just go downhill from there, as the rather unthreatening rapists and murderers harass Ripley and curse a great deal before being torn apart by large fans, having their heads crushed by the unconvincing CGI alien, and finally volunteering to be murdered by the beast rather than letting the evil Company get hold of it. Fincher does the best he can with a terrible script, and there are some nice supporting turns by Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, and Brian Glover, but nothing could redeem the film's first 15 minutes. By the time Ripley takes a suicidal swan-dive into a vat of molten lead, cradling a baby alien as it explodes from her chest, many viewers will not know whether to reach for the remote control or a warm bath and a razorblade. A loathsome experience by any standard, Alien 3 still made enough money for Weaver to return as a Ripley clone in Alien Resurrection (1997). Robert Firsching

When contact is suddenly lost with the colonists, Ripley returns to the planet with a squad of marines, an android (Lance Henriksen), and a Company executive (Paul Reiser) with a mission of his own. Once on the planet, no survivors can be found except for Newt, a little girl who awakens motherly instincts in Ripley just in time for the acid-blooded aliens to attack in what quickly becomes a one-sided battle for sheer survival. Considered by many to be the best of the series, ALIENS is a fast-paced, high-intensity thrill ride that set a new standard for action films and cemented director James Cameron's status as one of Hollywood's leading directors following the success of THE TERMINATOR. Weaver received an Academy Award nomination and became a feminist hero for her strong, sensitive performance as the survivor Ripley, while costars Reiser, Henriksen, and Bill Paxton all give career-making performances in this landmark sci-fi extravaganza.
In this cathartic sequel to ALIEN, Ripley is rescued after years of hibernation in space and reluctantly drawn into a second encounter with the deadly xenomorphs, this time as part of a gung-ho platoon of narines. James Cameron's film is truly one of the greatest action movies of all time.

Hollywood customarily takes its time to plumb history, waiting decades -- or even centuries -- to explore the real-life drama of, say, the Vietnam War. But in the case of All the President's Men, director Alan J. Pakula set a particularly high bar for himself, depicting a complex chapter of American political history only two years after the actual events had transpired. Based on the prize-winning book by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the story details the step-by-step investigation of the Watergate scandal that led to the 1974 resignation of President Richard Nixon. In preparing for their roles, Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman did formidable legwork researching the intrepid journalists, and their efforts paid off -- Redford conjuring to perfection Woodward's fastidious, almost irksome, penchant for exactitude; Hoffman painting Bernstein as a charming (if a bit reckless) go-getter with an eye for good copy and attractive women. And Jason Robards brings the right blend of grumpiness and grit to the role of Post editor Ben Bradlee. The story has a tragic inevitability -- from an absurdly bungled break-in at an office building to the systematic crumbling of a presidential administration -- which Pakula captures vividly in this edge-of-your-seat political thriller. Bruce Kluger
All Movie Guide
Conspiracy film specialist Alan J. Pakula turned journalists Bob Woodward's and Carl Bernstein's best-selling account of their Watergate investigation into one of the hit films of Bicentennial year 1976. While researching a story about a botched 1972 burglary of Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex, green Washington Post reporters/rivals Woodward (Robert Redford, who also exec produced) and Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) stumble on a possible connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. With the circumspect approval of executive editor Ben Bradlee (Jason Robards), the pair digs deeper. Aided by a guilt-ridden turncoat bookkeeper (Jane Alexander) and the vital if cryptic guidance of Woodward's mystery source Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), Woodward and Bernstein "follow the money" all the way to the top of the Nixon Administration. Despite Deep Throat's warnings that their lives are in danger, and the reluctance of older Post editors, Woodward and Bernstein are determined to get out the story of the crime and its Presidential cover-up. Once Bradlee is convinced, the final teletype impassively taps out the historically explosive results. Lucia Bozzola

Before jetting across the universe in Star Wars, George Lucas set his sights on mapping a more modest locale: American Graffiti follows four friends on the streets of Modesto, California one late summer night in 1962. With DJ Wolfman Jack (as himself) spinning rock 'n' roll classics (he's almost like a Greek chorus), the tunes blare from the hot rods cruising the main strip and set the tone for the evening's misadventures. Curt (Richard Dreyfuss) and his best friend Steve (Ron Howard) are about to leave for college in the east, but Curt's having a change of heart -- and searching for a blonde in a white Thunderbird (Suzanne Somers) -- while Steve and his girlfriend Laurie (Cindy Williams) try to say goodbye for the year. John Milner (Paul Le Mat), the aging king of the strip in his neon yellow hot rod, is unwittingly shackled with annoying street urchin Carol (Mackenzie Philips) and dogged by eager street racer Bob Falfa (Harrison Ford). Compared to Lucas's Star Wars trilogy -- to a degree, the protracted coming-of-age tale of Luke Skywalker -- American Graffiti exists much more within the moment. It savors youth's bittersweet last fandango, when looming maturity seems to make each moment more precious than the last.

All Movie Guide
It's the last night of summer 1962, and the teenagers of Modesto, California, want to have some fun before adult responsibilities close in. Among them are Steve (Ron Howard) and Curt (Richard Dreyfuss), college-bound with mixed feelings about leaving home; nerdy Terry "The Toad" (Charles Martin Smith), who scores a dream date with blonde Debbie (Candy Clark); and John (Paul Le Mat ), a 22-year-old drag racer who wonders how much longer he can stay champion and how he got stuck with 13-year-old Carol (Mackenzie Phillips) in his deuce coupe. As D. J. Wolfman Jack spins 41 vintage tunes on the radio throughout the night, Steve ponders a future with girlfriend Laurie (Cindy Williams), Curt chases a mystery blonde, Terry tries to act cool, and Paul prepares for a race against Bob Falfa (Harrison Ford), but nothing can stop the next day from coming, and with it the vastly different future ushered in by the 1960s. Fresh off The Godfather (1972), producer Francis Ford Coppola had the clout to get his friend George Lucas's project made, but only for $750,000 on a 28-day shooting schedule. Despite technical obstacles, and having to shoot at night, cinematographer Haskell Wexler gave the film the neon-lit aura that Lucas wanted, evoking the authentic look of a suburban strip to go with the authentic sound of rock-n-roll. Universal, which wanted to call the film Another Slow Night in Modesto, thought it was unreleasable. But Lucas' period detail, co-writers Willard Huyck's and Gloria Katz's realistic dialogue, and the film's nostalgia for the pre-Vietnam years apparently appealed to a 1973 audience embroiled in cultural chaos: American Graffiti became the third most popular movie of 1973 (after The Exorcist and The Sting), establishing the reputations of Lucas (whose next film would be Star Wars) and his young cast, and furthering the onset of soundtrack-driven, youth-oriented movies. Although the film helped spark 1970s nostalgia for the 1950s, nothing else would capture the flavor of the era with the same humorous candor and latent sense of foreboding. Lucia Bozzola

Richard Gere plays Zack Mayo, an aloof, taciturn man who aspires to be a navy pilot. Once he's arrived at training camp for his 13-week officer's course, Mayo runs afoul of abrasive, no-nonsense drill sergeant Emil Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.). Mayo --or "Mayonnaise," as he is dubbed by the irascible Foley -- is an excellent cadet, but a little cold around the heart. Foley rides Mayo mercilessly, sensing that the young man would be prime officer material if he weren't so self-involved. Zack's affair with working girl Paula Pokrifi (Debra Winger) is likewise compromised by his unwillingness to give of himself. Only after Mayo's best friend Sid Worsley (David Keith) commits suicide over an unhappy romance does Zack come out of his shell and mature into a real human being. Take away the R-rated dialogue and the sex scenes, and Officer and a Gentleman could have been a 1937 MGM flick, maybe with Robert Taylor as Zack, Wallace Beery as Foley, and Jimmy Stewart as Sid. An Officer and a Gentleman was nominated for 7 Oscars, with wins to Gossett and to the hit song "Up Where We Belong." The closing scene has surely become a classic of movie romance. Hal Erickson

Description: A big-budget B-movie thrill ride, ANACONDA stars Jon Voight as Sarone, a hardened, crusty river man riding the Amazon who is rescued by a film crew when the propeller on his boat malfunctions. The crew, led by director Terri Flores (Jennifer Lopez), hopes to make a documentary about the Amazon tribe known as The People of the Mist. She is joined by her cinematographer (Ice Cube) and a scientist (Eric Stoltz), among others. Unfortunately for all of them, a monstrous, 40-foot anaconda--which habitually swallows its prey whole--is on the rampage. The snake, which is a marvel of effects technology achieved through a seamless combination of animatronics and computer animation, helped make this one of the box office success stories of 1997.
Description: An above-average schlock horror/adventure yarn with a credible enough collection of characters, "Anaconda" benefits from a colorful cast and setting, good pacing and an unpretentious delivery. Set on the Amazon River where a group of documentary film makers are out to capture a rarely seen tribe of South American people, the film moves along on a strong if languid current. Rescuing a stranded snake hunter, played with infectious hamminess by Jon Voigt, the motley crew is soon led by the crafty mercenary off course and unwittingly into a nest of giant Anacondas that have seemingly taken over a tributary of the mighty river. The effects are impressive and not too excessive, and most importantly the film never takes itself too seriously -- a good thing since it never really rises above the "Creature From the Black Lagoon" level.
Description: A film crew on assignment the Amazon tangle with a big snake when they rescue a shipwrecked big game hunter. A fun mindless romp which is 80% animatronic and 20% computer generated.

Based on the novel by best-selling science-fiction alarmist Michael Crichton, The Andromeda Strain (1971) combines nuclear fears with space-age technophobia and early-'70s paranoia. Though the action occasionally flags, director Robert Wise documents a diverse group of scientists' efforts to identify a mysterious killer organism and vanquish it with clinical precision, making the most of split-screen editing to show the complexity of the work and ratchet up the suspense. Mostly shot on an elaborate set with a cast of unknowns, The Andromeda Strain also showcases the power and allure of technology, reaching a visually trippy climax as a young doctor scales the core of the multi-level, underground "Wildfire" lab and dodges lasers to avert a nuclear holocaust. One of the period's many dire cautionary tales about the perils of overreaching and the potential nefarious motives of the government, The Andromeda Strain still earned attention for its sleek look, garnering Oscar nominations for art direction and editing. Annie -- the sunny, syrupy 1977 Broadway musical wherein such optimistic anthems as "Tomorrow" and "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" originated -- found a surprising onscreen shepherd in director John Huston. The man's man behind such classics as The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Prizzi's Honor, it's fair to say, had to stretch a bit for sweet. Perhaps the grittier elements Huston brought to the film didn't hurt, though, as Annie ultimately overcame its critical drubbing and lackluster box-office performance to become a home-video favorite. Aileen Quinn, as the titular indefatigable carrot-topped moppet, is plucked from an orphanage to live for one week with wealthy Daddy Warbucks (a robust Albert Finney), who is desperately seeking an image upgrade. Carol Burnett is a hoot as Annie's besotted nemesis, Miss Hannigan, the tyrannical, child-hating orphanage owner who schemes to spoil Annie's happiness. The film also benefits from scene-stealing Broadway veterans Tim Curry, Bernadette Peters, and Ann Reinking. A karaoke feature on this disc allows you to sing along with the hit-and-miss score's three most beloved songs, "Tomorrow," "Maybe," and "It's the Hard-Knock Life." Even more irresistible than Annie herself is an "act-along" feature that offers starstruck viewers the opportunity to step in for Quinn in selected dramatic scenes. Donald Liebenson

This family classic is adapted from the Broadway musical, which was based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie. During the Great Depression in New York City, a plucky red-haired scrapper named Annie (Aileen Quinn) is the voice of hope for her fellow orphans who live under the supervision of drunken floozy Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett). Annie's spirit is fueled by the belief that her real parents dropped her off at the orphanage with a half of a locket, promising to return for her with the other half. One day, the dingy orphanage is visited by the sophisticated Grace Farrell (Ann Reinking), personal secretary to conservative politician Oliver Warbucks (Albert Finney). In order to improve his image, Grace brings Annie to the Warbucks estate for a weeklong visit. Annie quickly wins the hearts of servants and politicians alike, eventually even bringing her song of hope, "Tomorrow," to President Roosevelt in Washington. Warbucks and Grace even go so far as to perform a public search for Annie's parents, creating an opportunity for Miss Hannigan, Rooster (Tim Curry), and Lily (Bernadette Peters) to scam their way to the reward money. Denzel Washington's powerful directorial debut offers a tale that is at once familiar and wholly original. Written by the real Antwone Fisher and based on his own life, the film opens at a Southern California naval base, where a young seaman's hair-trigger temper has just landed him in trouble, and not for the first time. Fisher is placed in the care of a Navy psychotherapist, played with great warmth and depth by Washington, who guides him through a process of wrenching self-discovery, helping him identify and conquer the demons of his horrific childhood and guiding him toward the healing powers of home and family. Washington's directing, like his acting, is rock-solid and unpretentious. He deftly avoids showiness and sentimentality in favor of straightforward storytelling that is all the more powerful for its directness and emotional honesty. The film treads well-worn ground, calling to mind Finding Forrester and Good Will Hunting, and usually in good ways. Yet the details of Fisher's screenplay and the mesmerizing performances help make it a uniquely inspiring experience. Washington elicits wonderful work from his cast, particularly newcomers Derek Luke as the innately intelligent Fisher, Joy Bryant as his tender love interest, and veterans like Novella Nelson, who makes Fisher's foster mother seem especially terrifying. In addition to a running commentary by Washington, the DVD features a fascinating interview with Fisher among other featurettes. David Sobel

The directorial debut of Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington, Antwone Fisher is an autobiographical drama written by the real-life Antwone Fisher. Through an introduction to anger management, Antwone is able to confront some secrets of his past and eventually search out his family for a confrontation. Also starring model-turned-actress Joy Bryant as Antwone's girlfriend, Cheryl, and Salli Richardson as Davenport's wife. NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniques, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. The result is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and one of the biggest box-office hits of 1995. --Jeff Shannon | Amazon | Yes | Yes | | Steve | | |

Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire was a rousing, old-fashioned adventure. This produced-for-video sequel is more pedestrian, but it should excite younger thrill seekers. Bespectacled cartographer Milo Thatch (voiced by James Arnold Taylor in place of Michael J. Fox) and Queen Kida are restoring the underwater kingdom of Atlantis to its former glory. There is trouble on the surface, though, and before you can say "Hail Atlantis," Milo, Kida, and the intrepid crew from the first film venture back to terra firma to solve a series of supernatural mysteries involving a devil fish, vengeful Native American spirits, and the mythical, missing "Spear of Destiny." Along the way, Kida wrestles with whether or not to share the awesome power of Atlantis's enchanted crystals with the outside world. As with Disney's previous produced-for-video sequels, this is more kid-friendly and less intense than the original (it plays like the pilot for a possible TV series). After the muscle-bound Hercules and Tarzan, it is refreshing to see geek-hero Milo rise to the occasion using more brains than brawn. Comic relief is ably provided by the colorful crew, each voiced by the original cast members, including Don Novello as demolitions expert Vinny, Corey Burton as Mole, and Florence Stanley as the hilariously deadpan Mrs. Packard. While not as spectacular as its forerunner, this sequel does deliver fantastic moments -- including encounters with a tentacled sea monster and a pack of cantankerous sand coyotes -- that make this return to Atlantis a welcome one indeed. Disney takes another plunge under the sea for its most exciting animated extravaganza in years. No pop-fueled soundtrack. No cute animal sidekicks. No Broadway-bound song-and-dance showstoppers. Instead, Disney's 40th animated feature is a thrilling throwback to the studio's grand tradition of live-action adventures such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It is also another awesome leap into uncharted realms of the imagination and state-of-the-art animation. (Disney recruited the services of famed comic book artist Mike Mignola to help design the production.) Michael J. Fox heads the voice cast as Milo Thatch, who repairs boilers in a museum basement while yearning to continue his grandfather's quest to find the legendary lost empire of Atlantis. He gets his chance when one of his grandfather's long-lost journals surfaces. An eccentric benefactor (voiced by Frasier's John Mahoney) funds an expedition crewed by a rogues' gallery of colorful characters serving under the imposing Commander Rourke (James Garner). The story may become a bit hard to follow for youngsters once Milo and company reach Atlantis (something to do with an ancient energy source); but they'll get the big picture when Rourke's true nature surfaces, Atlantis is threatened, and mild-mannered Milo gets in touch with his inner Indiana Jones. Atlantis earned a PG rating for its explosive action set-pieces, mildly risqué humor, and provocative character designs (most notably the bombshell Helga, Rourke's right-hand woman). As folksinger Donovan once sang, "Hail, Atlantis!"
All Movie Guide
The first Disney cartoon to be produced in the 70 mm format since The Black Cauldron (1985), this blend of traditional animation with computer-generated imagery is a straight adventure tale of the Jules Verne school, eschewing the studio's typical formula of cute critters mixed with song-and-dance routines. Michael J. Fox is the voice of Milo Thatch, a lowly museum employee and linguist in the early 20th century who's determined to continue his late grandfather's search for the lost, sunken empire of Atlantis. Bankrolled by eccentric millionaire Preston Whitmore (John Mahoney), Milo teams up with a diverse crew of mercenaries led by submarine commander Rourke (James Garner). After a sea battle with a giant denizen of the deep, the explorers locate the submerged civilization. Milo falls in love with Princess Kida (Cree Summer), the daughter of Atlantis' aged ruler (Leonard Nimoy), and must choose sides when it's revealed that some of his fellow expedition members intend to steal a mystical energy source from their hosts. Claudia Christian, Mark Hamill, David Ogden Stiers, Don Novello, and the late Jim Varney co-star. Although considered a shoo-in for a nomination in the debut year of the new Oscar category of Best Animated Feature, Atlantis: The Lost Empire faced stiff competition from other non-live-action entertainment in the summer of 2001, including Shrek, Final Fantasy, and Monsters Inc..
